Bio-What?

01/09/2020

Most people have probably not heard the term Biophilia. Basically it's a scientific term of study to say that people have a tendency to want to connect with nature. Yes, even those that like to sit on the couch and watch TV all day have a need to connect with nature. This connection can happen in several different ways through your senses. The sounds of birds chirping outside your window, the smell of jasmine flowers infiltrating your home, and the sight of sunlight rays shining in, it all brings a connection to the outdoors. You can try this experiment in your own home. Close the windows and shades to your home in every room during the afternoon. I don't know about you, but I start to feel like I'm in a cave, and not the cool ones with the stalactite and stalagmite. Just stay like that for a bit and see you how you feel. Once you've tortured yourself for long enough, open everything back up and notice how your feeling changes. It's quite amazing. Here are some things you can do in your home:

Hang some photographs or paintings of nature on your wall. Anything that depicts outdoor scenes or plants. Below I have photographs of flower closeups that I took to display in my home. The colors are cheery and are very eye catching. These are fun and attractive ways to connect with the outdoors.

You can also buy plants and scatter them around your home where appropriate. If plants are not your forte, because you are known for killing all of them, fear not, you probably just don't know what those plants need.

These plants below are known as succulents. You can buy them practically anywhere these days. These are actually really low maintenance plants and take very little water about once a week or a little longer. They don't like to stay wet, so make sure they can drain. They tend to like a lot of sunlight generally, so a window sill where the sun comes in at least part of the day will make these guys happy. Some plants can be in low lighting levels such as shade. You just need to know your plant type. If you pick up plants from random places, there will be no specialist to help you determine the plant and what it needs to survive, so I recommend going an actual plant store with plant specialists to get the guidance you need. Places like Succulent Native here in Austin are one of many great stores!

Below are some really easy to maintain leafy ivy plants. these grow lots of leaves as long as they get good lighting and always have water in their bowl, no dirt needed. Look at the fun stuff you can do with them! These are new stems, so, it will be fun to watch them grow and fill out! A beautiful accent to add to any wall!
